 About Dr G. Michael Lopez

I'm Dr. G Michael Lopez, born and raised in the vibrant community of Las Vegas, New Mexico, where I also spent my childhood on our family's ranch in Mora County. I am the son of Gilbert “Gillie” and Rosaline Lopez who were long-time educators in Las Vegas. During my high school years, I was deeply involved in athletics, earning letters in four sports. Throughout those formative years, I spent my summers working on our family ranch near Watrous, NM, learning the values of hard work and dedication.

Following my passion for both sports and academics, I attended the University of Notre Dame, where I was a walk-on on the football team. I pursued a dual major in electrical engineering and pre-med, graduating magna cum laude in 1974. To support my education, I worked with the highway department during my summer breaks, gaining invaluable experiences in various Northern New Mexico locations, including Santa Rosa, Springer, and Wagon Mound.

My academic journey continued at Stanford Medical School, where I graduated in the top 10% of my class in 1978. I then completed my internship and residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School/Parkland Memorial Hospital from 1978 to 1981. Fulfilling a lifelong goal, I returned to Northern New Mexico immediately after my training, to serve the community as a physician. Since 1981, I have been dedicated to the health and well-being of the people of Las Vegas, New Mexico, and the surrounding areas. In the 42 years that I have been practicing medicine in northern New Mexico I have never closed my office, including during the dark days of COVID-19.

In addition to my medical practice, I have continued to manage our family's ranch and farm, the Lopez Ranch. Just like my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather before me, we still take our livestock to graze in the Pecos Wilderness every summer. I have also served as as mayordomo of our community ditch for the past 24 years.

My journey would not be complete without the love and support of my wife, Ginny Lopez, a native of Mora, NM. Together, we have been blessed with five beautiful children. My roots in this community run deep, and my commitment to serving the people of Northern New Mexico is unwavering. As your candidate for the New Mexico State Senate District 8, I am dedicated to ensuring a future where our communities are safe, vibrant, and prosperous.
